The Calgary Udderly Art Project commissioned me, to paint a cow for a community project to raise funds for societies and organizations. these cows were auctioned in October 2000. They were on display around the City of Calgary, both outdoors and inside shopping malls and buildings. It was estimated that there were a herd of 300 - much to the delight of pedestrian traffic Crocus Dancer is a transformer/buffalo protectively wrapped in the birch bark messages of the ancestors. Every seven years the crocus (prairie flower) re-seeds itself and flowers in the spring - a promise of renewal...... This is the Seventh Generation for Native People - a time of transformation and change.......
This Cow, entitled 'Crocus Dancer' really contains the image of a Buffalo protectively wrapped in Birch bark. The funds that are raised at auction have been kindly directed by the patron to the Calgary Aboriginal Arts Awareness Society , suite 202B, 315 - 11 Avenue SW. Calgary AB. (403) 296 2227....to celebrate professionalism in Aboriginal Arts: Theatre, Visual Art, Performance Art, Literary Arts,Film & Video.....and New Media . I have been involved as a volunteer for 13 years serving on it's board for 5 years and President for 3 years. Board members of CAAAS, The Calgary Aboriginal Arts Awareness Society, in Joane Cardinal-Schubert's studio, left to right: Susan Dumont, Public Relations; Lucille Daniels, Secretary; Joane Cardinal-Schubert, President; Wendy English, Treasurer; Adrian Wolfleg, Membership Committee. |

" This Ain't The Sistine Chapel....Buffalo-Hide " This second cow I painted sold at auction in October 2000, the funds raised went to the Plains Indian Cultural Survival School, Calgary, allocated to creating a standard art room, equal to any high school in Calgary."This Ain't The Sistine Chapel ...Buffalo-Hide refers to a revisioning of what life would be like - believe me,lying on the floor painting the under belly of a life-sized bondo - cow was not something I thought I would ever do in my life's career as an artist.....when dreaming those many years ago.....at the beginning of my journey as an artist. This first view of the Buffalo-Hide contains pictographic messages from our ancestors over the mountains. It is thought the first herd of horses came into Alberta through the British Columbia passes, and since the horse is the messenger......hence the message.......This view of the other side of the buffalo hide shows a pictorial record, by the artist, of the horses' journey into the future... some singular, some together.....definitely plodding....there is even a buffalo following along......(smile)

Drawings in White Conte Following are a series of works based on historical happenings, that I completed in 1999. The are part of a series of Blue Works I have been doing since 1988 and also relate somewhat to my birch bark scroll series. They are largely about containerizing and compartmentalizing and serous issues regarding the environment, culture, spirituality and medical treatment These drawings symbolizing cathedral windows are available at Spirit Wrestler Gallery, Vancouver, B.C. derekn@mail.spiritwrestler.com
