A note about
scale (an important issue in cartography). In an atlas,
the scale on a single 8.5 X 11 inch page is 1:140,000,000; one inch
on the map represents 140 million inches on the actual surface of
Earth. The amount of detail that can be included depends on the
scale; the larger the scale, of course, the more detail. The
next version of The Great Cosmic Joke will include a 1:1 scale map
of Earth.
