From a review of Ken
Dornstein's Accidentally on Purpose: The Making of a Personal Injury
Underworld in America (St. Martin's)
"In the 1920's, a man named F.E. Caldwell earned his living;and launched
a thousand slapstick gags; by riding in rail cars and slipping on banana
peels that he had carefully tossed at his own feet. When the railroad's
claims man showed up, Caldwell would negotiate a settlement. Though he
was never prosecuted, some of the many 'banana-peelers' he inspired did
hard time."
